For Pride Month, the Transbay Coalition was thrilled to partner with Queer Silicon Valley and Liveable Sunnyvale for a special happy hour celebrating the theme of inclusion & solidarity: “Everyone on the bus, no one under it.”
Advocates from around the Bay came out to “Off The Rail Brewing” on the car-free outdoor plaza on Murphy Avenue in downtown Sunnyvale to chat all things transit, bike lanes, and street safety and the intersections with/lessons from the LGBTQ+ liberation movement.
Transbay Coalition Co-founder Carter Lavin kicked off the event by talking about how mobility freedom is essential for connecting communities, especially for young people. Queer Silicon Valley founder, and former Caltrain Board Member, Ken Yeager shared stories of his experience as the first openly gay elected official in Santa Clara County (which you can read more about in his book), and his years of service on the Caltrain board. Sunnyvale Councilmember Richard Mehlinger spoke on the importance of queer representation in public office as well as the different aspects that make communities welcoming spaces. And Liveable Sunnyvale’s Mike Serrone spoke on changes in the Sunnyvale community and how to make more parts of the community accessible via transit.
Attendees mingled and chatted about issues like bus service on the Dumbarton Bridge, keeping train service for Pittsburg-Antioch, making car-free plazas like Murphy Ave more common throughout the region, and much more.
Special thanks goes out to Transbay Coalition volunteer Dylan Finch for helping coordinate the event and thanks to everyone who came out!
